Italia Nostra

Venezia Piazza San MarcoItalia Nostra is the oldest national association for the defence of the historical, cultural and environmental heritage of Italy. It was established in 1955 by Umberto Zanotti-Bianco, Luigi Magnani, Giorgio Bassani, Elena Croce, Desideria Pasolini Dall'Onda, Pietro Trompeo and Hubert Howard.
The association has its main office in Rome and over 200 sections countrywide. Italia Nostra rigorously remains outside party politics. The association has its own independent policies for historical preservation, territorial planning and landscape protection. For over 50 years, Italia Nostra has contributed to the promotion of a conservation culture based on the respect of the national historical and human heritage.
Through detailed research Italia Nostra documents the following topics through current affairs journalism: national heritage; natural and historical evolution; historical city centres; town and country planning; national parks, the environment; energy issues; national development models; transport issues; agriculture; sea and coastline; islands; museums; libraries; historical archives. This research constitutes a unique and irreplaceable heritage for the disposition of the country.
In its long history, Italia Nostra has contributed to the institution of the Appia Antica Park in Rome and the Delta del Po Park, the recovery of the Ferrara walls, the institution of Act Number 394 on Natural Protected Areas and to the operation of Nettuno regarding Italian coastline. The most significant actions are those aimed at conserving Agrigento and Paestum, the Villas of Veneto and the Euganean hills, the Smeralda coast, the pinewoods of Migliarino and Ravenna.
Since 2008 Italia Nostra has intensified cooperation with Europa Nostra in favour of the safeguard of cultural heritage in Italy and in Europe, by regular communication and exchange of information and documentation and by undertaking, whenever appropriate, joint campaigns in favour of endangered cultural heritage in Italy.

We thank the Venice Section for the cooperation.
